A Brief Overview of Double Coupler and Its Capacity

Scaffolding couplers are an integral part of scaffolding where they are primarily used to assemble tube and coupler. They are designed to join two scaffold tubes at a different angle to ensure proper connection and installation of the scaffolding at the work site, and to offer friction between the connector and the steel pipe to transfer the weight load from one place to another.

Scaffolding couplers carry a multitude of uses such as the initial fold or bending of the bars, load eccentricity, and many others. All in all, they are responsible for maintaining the scaffold’s stability.

What are Double Couplers in Scaffolding?

Also referred to as fixed clamps, double couplers are a type of scaffolding coupler that can be connected to a tube, either electro-galvanised or zinc-plated, in pressed or drop forged versions. Joining scaffold tubes in 90 degrees, these right angle connectors are designed for use in various types of scaffolding construction including in lighting rigs, staging and guard rails.

Double couplers have a safe working load of 6.1kN, making it ideal for use on a ledger, standard, transom or brace. They also work well in resisting tension or compressive loads.

German Type Forged Double Couplers

Thanks to their excellent slide and damage resistance, double couplers are amongst the widely used heavy-duty, anti-slipping forging scaffolding couplers in Germany as well as other countries. There exist two types of German scaffold double coupler : normal threaded and round threaded. The latter is also termed the Layher scaffold double coupler, a relatively  strong duty scaffold drop-forged right angle clamp.

Double Coupler Capacity - What is the Safe Working Load?

Sizeable accidents are prone to happen when the scaffolding structure you opted for doesn't meet your purpose. Getting to know the load-bearing capacity of the scaffolding and access systems helps ensure the safety of workers and bystanders in the work site.

Double couplers have an outside diameter of 48.3 mm at right angles. They come with tightening nuts that meet the standards of the Scaffold Spanner (23mm A/F) with the ‘T’ bolts, nuts and washers being replaceable. They are manufactured in such a robust design that are able to deliver optimal durability and reliability. Always opt for one that features a hot-dip galvanised finish such as that manufactured by Dura International to take full advantage of its corrosion resistance. The typical working load limit of double couplers is 6.25kN (637.32 KGF) against slip at tightening torque of 54Nm.

Why Choose Dura International’s Drop Forged Double Coupler?

Dura International manufactures and supplies BS1139 and EN 74 standard scaffolding couplers, which act as connectors between scaffold tubes.

In comparison to scaffolding swivel couplers, Dura’s drop forged double couplers (O.D. 48.3mm) allow the scaffold tubes to join together at 90 degrees thanks to their centres that are manufactured to precision. They make an excellent load bearing fitting that resists both slip and distortion. Zinc plated and hot dipped galvanised, these double couplers are able to resist corrosion well.

All couplers are manufactured to stringent quality standards and underwent rigorous testing and checking before being shipped to clients, this include :

  • Testing to meet EN, BS, and AS requirements

  • Testing to meet EN 74-1, one of the strictest clamp testing standards in the world.

Dura International is committed to the continuous improvement of its products. With ample knowledge and rich experience in hand, you can trust our team in supplying all sorts of scaffolding couplers that meet your requirements.
